Pure white noise is sometimes unpleasantly harsh, so they have modified the white noise from this machine to sound like a steady rain or waterfall depending on how much bass or treble you add with the treble-bass slide control. There is also a surf feature that creates a good irregular surf sound. For simple white noise we recommend this model of sound machine above other electronic models since the sound it produces does not loop. Another advantage this electronic model has over the mechanical Sleepmate models is that this machine will go louder, although there is some crackling from the speaker as you approach full volume.
