The SleepMate SoundScreen 580 White Noise Machine is the single speed version of the famous Marpac 980 white sound machine. The tonal quality (bass and treble) of the sound can be adjusted by rotating the top and the side housing. The SleepMate SoundScreen 580 and 980 White Sound Makers do not have a volume control - volume is controlled with a speed switch. The single speed SleepMate SoundScreen 580 is the same as the high speed setting on the two speed 980. The 580 produces white sound mechanically (like a fan) which creates a consistent, smooth sound of rushing air without actually blowing air around the room. This white sound effectively masks unwanted noises and creates a sense of calm, making it easier to concentrate, relax and / or sleep. The SleepMate has proven to be a durable and effective design - with many people getting 15 years or more of great service. Together, the 980 and 580 are the most popular of all white sound machines. Other models produce white sound electronically and play it through a speaker. If you want to mask more distracting sounds, the electronic models may be your better choice (they have louder volume).
